Prescriptions

Ordering repeat prescriptions

We highly recommend using your NHS account (through the NHS website or in the NHS App) to order repeat prescriptions.

Alternatively you can use the GP online system: SystmOnline, if you are registered to do so.

These accounts show you all your repeat medicine and dosage and you can choose the ones you need.

You can also:

  • Tick the items that you need on your repeat prescription tear-off slip or by writing your name, address and the items on a piece of paper. There is a posting box for repeat prescription requests in each health centre.
  • You can also post requests to us but please allow sufficient time.

We do not take repeat prescription requests over the phone or email.

We would like to encourage all patient to order their prescriptions online as this saves us time and helps us prepare your medication quicker.

Collecting your prescription

Information:

You can usually collect your prescription 5 working days after you have ordered it.

You will need to choose a pharmacy to collect your prescription from. We call this nominating a pharmacy.

You can change your nominated pharmacy at any time:

Medpoint

If you would like to collect your medication when we are closed or don’t have time to wait if there is a queue, then Medpoint could be for you.

Medpoint is a prescription collection point that provides a safe, quick and secure way for patients to collect their medication 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We have a Medpoint machine at both Callington and Gunnislake Health centres.

The machine cannot be used for refrigerated meds, e.g. inhalers or eye solutions, nor will it be used for controlled drugs but will be used for small or medium size bags of medication to maximise the number that can be held in the dispensing machine. If you would like to use Medpoint and your medication is suitable for collection from the dispenser, you can complete a registration form from our dispensaries or complete a form online.

You are required to give your name, date of birth, first line of your address, mobile and email address, and a signature. You can use the service if you pay for your medication or if you are exempt. If your medication is in the correct category, you will be able to collect it without needing to enter the surgery and also outside of surgery hours if preferred. Once registered, when your medication is ready you will receive a text message with a pin number.

If you pay for your medication, you will receive a link to enable you to pay prior to collection. You have three days to collect your bag of medication from the machine by entering the pin number into the keypad. If it is not collected within three days, the medication will be returned to the practice.

Sign up for Medpoint today.

Questions about your prescription

If you have questions about your medicine, your local pharmacists can answer these. They can also answer questions on medicines you can buy without a prescription.

The NHS website has information on how your medicine works, how and when to take it, possible side effects and answers to your common questions.

Medication reviews

If you have a repeat prescription, we may ask you to come in for a regular review. We will be in touch when this is due.

To improve our service to our patients, we have introduced an ‘all in one’ medication review. This will reduce the number of times patients need to attend the surgery for routine review appointments every year. Therefore, patients who fit certain medical criteria, will be called around their month of birth to come in and be seen for a review.

Some patients may need further tests or reviews during the year, so we can maintain quality of care.

Please visit our annual medication review page for more information.

What to do with old medicines

Take it to the pharmacy you got it from or bring it in to the surgery. Do not put it in your household bin or flush it down the toilet.

How pharmacies can help

Pharmacists can give you advice on a range of conditions and suggest medicines that can help.

They may also be able to offer treatment and some prescription medicine for some conditions, without you needing to see a GP (this is called Pharmacy First). They can also advise on medicine that you can buy without a prescription.

Many pharmacies are open until late and at weekends. You do not need an appointment.
